Selected Centers

The first two centers
In 2019, the board of the AM-TTC Alliance decided to fund - as a first step - two centers in 2019/2020: the ANAXAM center and the Swiss m4m Center. Furthermore, the board recommended the SERI to fund these two centers also in the period 2021 to 2024 as research institutions of national importance according to Art. 15 of the Federal Act on the Promotion of Research and Innovation (RIPA).

At the end of 2020, after the evaluation and recommendation by the Swiss Science Council (SSC), the State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation (SERI) confirmed that these two centers will be financially supported under Art. 15 RIPA by the Federal Department of Economic Affairs, Education and Research in the period of 2021-2024.
ANAXAM and the Swiss m4m Center started their activities in the second half of 2019. You will find a general description of these two centers and the links to their websites in the section below:

ANAXAM is a technology transfer center that provides industry access to advanced analytical methods using neutrons and synchrotron radiation, x-rays in particular. It was founded in 2019 by the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI), the University of Applied Sciences and Arts Northwestern Switzerland (FHNW), the Swiss Nanoscience Institute (SNI) and the Canton of Aargau. It is located near the PSI in Villigen, in the Canton of Aargau, Switzerland.

The Swiss m4m Center promotes the development and usage of 3D printing for innovative medical implants. With an ISO 13485 certified pilot production line and a strong understanding in additive manufacturing, clinical needs and quality assurance, it offers access to validated processes and equipment and helps in particular SME to learn about and to better use this new technology. The Swiss m4m Center was founded in 2019 by Empa, SUPSI, Precipart and 41medical and is located in the Bettlach, a region well known for its strong medtech industry.

Two further centers
Together with the SERI and the ETH Board as the funding partners of the initiative, the AM-TTC Alliance issued a second call for proposals in 2021. At the end of 2022, after a comprehensive evaluation and selection process, the SERI and the AM-TTC Alliance decided to fund two further AM-TTCs: one in the field of cobotics and one in the field of photonics. You will find more information about the funding decision in this press release.

The Swiss Cobotics Competence Center (S3C) in Biel aims to demonstrate the opportunities of collaboration between humans and robots. Its goal is to close the gap between the theoretical capabilities of robots and industrial reality and thus to bring more collaborative robots into industrial applications. With the S3C, Swiss companies - especially small and medium-sized companies - will gain access to know-how and a demonstration and test platform for innovative cobotic solutions.

The Swiss Photonics Integration Center (Swiss PIC) is located in the Swiss Innovation Park InnovAare. The focus of this center is on optical components and systems that transport and process light particles, so-called photons. The Swiss PIC will build facilities that will make it possible to integrate even the smallest optical components into larger systems or devices and test them. In Switzerland, there are many companies and research groups that develop and manufacture new innovative photonic components. Often they do not have access to such facilities. The Swiss PIC aims to close this gap by making such facilities accessible and helping companies to build their own integration and packaging solutions in their production.
